My 10,000 Lakes retrospective

I’ve had more than a full week to recover now from the 2009 10,000 Lakes Festival. Let me say upfront it was more fun than I’ve had in a long time, with the jam bands, the blue grass and the hippies — oh, sweet Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the hippies. In fact this retrospective is a little late because I spent most of last week sulking that I wasn’t drinking beer and listening to music in the sun anymore. But I told Greg I’d write about the frivolity of 10,000 Lakes if he gave me tickets, and I intend to do that.

I just need to clear my mind first with this open letter to Dave Matthews: Dear sir: I know David Byrne; David Byrne is a friend of mine, and you sir are no David Byrne.

Fleet Foxes. Dungen. First Avenue.

If that headline doesn’t tell you everything you need to know, try this on for size: Fleet Foxes, one of my favorite new bands from 2008, will be sharing the First Avenue Mainroom stage with Dungen come Sunday, August 9. Dungen is a Swedish psychedelic rock group whose music I’ve been loving since I first heard it three years ago. I caught their show at the 400 Bar on Election Night, and I fully expect the combination of them and the much more mellow Fleet Foxes to be nothing short of an experience. I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but I can’t help be excited; in fact, I’m going to order my tickets right now. Oh, and Pitchfork has a small write-up on the tour.
